01 · The brief

Jamie Hadley-Grave came to me through a direct message on Instagram. He'd recently set up his own accounting and tax practice in Cape Town, was getting referrals through word-of-mouth, but had nothing for people to find when they Googled him. No site, no consistent branding, just a name and a growing list of potential clients with nowhere to land.

The brief was straightforward in shape but ambitious in scope. Build a brand trustworthy enough for someone to hand over their tax affairs to a stranger. Then build the system that would carry it — across the website, across the documents Jamie sends to SARS, across the team he'd start hiring within months, and across the specialist service vertical he wanted to launch for yacht crew and seafarers.

02 · Phase one — the foundation

I started before Jamie had even sent me detailed feedback. On our first call I came in with two demo layouts and a rough brand direction — not because I was trying to be impressive, but because abstract briefs almost never get unstuck without something concrete to react to. People know what they want when they see it. They struggle to describe it cold.

From there the work was iterative. Jamie's the kind of client who likes to explore options before committing, which I respect — picky clients usually produce better work because they actually engage with the choices. We landed on a heraldic shield monogram for the H and G, paired with a serif wordmark in deep navy and a gold trim accent. The palette is built on warm cream, deep navy, and a single gold note — professional, but warm rather than corporate-blue-generic.

The website launched in early May. One page, clean wayfinding, no unnecessary noise. The typography pairs Cormorant Garamond for headlines with Inter for body and UI — editorial weight up top, technical precision down in the data. The whole foundation is built to look like a small architecture practice or a private bank, not an accountant's website. Which is precisely why it works.

03 · Phase two — the specialism

Two weeks after the main practice launched, Jamie raised a second front. A meaningful chunk of his client base was yacht crew — South Africans working aboard private vessels and superyachts, earning in foreign currency, eligible for the s10(1)(o)(i) Seafarer Exemption that allows up to 183 days at sea to be earned tax-free in South Africa. It's specialist work. Most accountants don't touch it. Jamie does it well.

The question was whether to fold it into the main brand or give it its own identity. We chose the latter. The Hadley-Grave parent brand stays general practice; Hadley-Grave Yacht & Seafarer Tax becomes the specialist vertical. Same shield silhouette as the parent, same colour palette, same typography — but with an anchor mark replacing the H|G monogram inside the shield. System architecture, not separation. A client who sees both brands immediately understands they're the same practice.

The vertical got its own positioning, its own landing page copy, and its own collateral. The headline that anchors the whole thing — 'Days at sea shouldn't cost you tax-free years' — frames a niche tax matter as a question of fairness rather than a technical exemption. The same person who'd avoid an accountant's website might book a call after reading that line.

04 · Phase three — the team

Brand systems sound abstract until the second person joins the practice. Jamie added two over the build period: Sinesipho 'Kat' Mala as Junior Accountant, and Wendy 'Wends' Alyiffe as Senior Bookkeeper and Consultant. Three people meant three email signatures, three sets of business cards, and a SARS-formatted letterhead that any of them could send out without it looking like three different practices.

Most small practices skip this step. The result is the predictable mess — partner emails look polished, junior emails look like Gmail defaults, letters from the bookkeeper look like they came from a different company entirely. We built the system so the practice scales without losing visual coherence. Each signature pulls from the same component pattern: shield mark, full lockup, name, title, three contact lines. Letterhead carries the SAICA registration line and the practitioner number block as a permanent fixture rather than an afterthought.

Then the templates. A formal letter template for SARS correspondence, a five-year seafarer income and tax summary template that Jamie can hand to a client or a mortgage broker or a visa officer, and a one-page ad template for newly admitted professionals looking for a finance person. Each one built so Jamie or anyone on the team can fill in the data and ship in under ten minutes.

05 · The outcome

The main practice site launched in May. Within weeks, Hadley-Grave was booking consultations directly through the site — cold leads finding the site through search and getting in touch, not just word-of-mouth referrals being warmed up by email. The brand felt like the practice. The practice started looking like the brand.

Phase two and three landed in early June. The Yacht & Seafarer Tax landing page went live alongside its own collateral suite. The team's email signatures, letterhead, and document templates rolled out across all three staff inside the same week. Jamie's now operating a multi-service practice with brand consistency across every surface — website, correspondence, client deliverables, ads, business cards.

Eight weeks from first call to final asset. Two service verticals live. Three team members operating off a single visual system. A brand that earns the trust it's built to signal.

I struck gold when Liam responded to my Instagram cry for help when I needed a website and branding for my business. From our very first call, I could tell Liam was different. He had already taken the initiative to create demo website layouts and branding concepts before I had even provided detailed feedback.

What stood out most was how well he listened to my ideas and transformed them into something even better than I had imagined. He was incredibly patient in presenting multiple variations and refining them until everything felt just right. No request was ever too much.

Liam has an exceptional ability to create a brand that feels both polished and personal. He helped bring Hadley-Grave Accounting and Tax to life with a look that is professional, elegant, and uniquely reflective of both my vision and his creative expertise.

The response from my clients has already been overwhelmingly positive. The website and branding have elevated my business in ways I hadn't anticipated, and I couldn't be happier with the result.

06 · The brand system

Built once. Used everywhere.

Two brands, one architecture. The Hadley-Grave parent identity governs the general accounting practice; the Yacht & Seafarer Tax sub-brand carries the specialist vertical. Same shield silhouette, same palette, same typography — different mark, different positioning.
